I think a great number of fiberglass boats, especially older ones,
have such stress cracks, as the gelcoat may flex but not stretch all
that well. My boat, an older one, has a masonite core. On later boats
Whitby used balsa. The balsa is susceptible to water-borne rot to a far
greater degree than the masonite. I'd worry a bit more if the boat had a
balsa core than if it had masonite. George can probably tell you when
they changed. Actually I don't think tiny stress cracks are a problem
even with balsa, but I am not an expert. Obviously it is at least an
appearance question. Unless there was obvious water infiltration - the
cockpit sole was very spongy - I would not try to fix them, as you might
be asking for trouble.
