Hi Matt,

When I replaced my engine, I also replace my coupling. I used a
flex-coupling from Vetus http://www.vetus.com/frame-sea.htm.

Here was my reasoning...

With the old Atomic 4 the engine was :hard mounted" to the boat. As the prop
pushs on the shaft it exerts force on the engine. With the newer diesel
engines, the engine is mounted on flexible mounts. As the porp pushes on the
engine the engine moves forward and tilts forward at an angle changing the
angle of the shaft-engine. The tolerance on this coupling is .004", so a
minor change can cause a big change in the coupling angle, hence the need
for a flex coupling IMHO.

I was on another A30 and watched the new engine under-load move forward by
1-1/4". This caused excessive wear on the cutlass bearing and other parts.
The owner had to have the engine remove; replaced the engine mounts with
stiffer mounts; and have a flex-coupling installed. That convinved me to
make these changes upon initial installation 6 years ago and it has been
fine [knock on wood] ever since.

Hope this helps.

I am doing preliminary research for installing my new Beta BD722. A friend
mentioned that I should remove the prop shaft and have the new coupling
"fitted and faced" at a prop shop. Has anyone done this? What have you
paid for this?
Thank you,
