George: While I like Bob's answer better, I think that you will find that
the rubber exhaust hose is temperature sensitive--more flexible when warm.
In a pinch, I have stretched rubber hose as much as .12 inch by boiling the
end of the hose before sliding it on. Grease the metal fitting--it doesn't
matter. This also works with sanitation hose, which, as you know, is not
rubber. It helps to have a small dull knife--like a table knife--with the
blade greased to ease edges and lips. A large and colorful vocabulary is
also useful, in as many different languages as possible.
