Bill - Your front hatch sounds like it is original. From you description, 
that's how they were made. I don't have pictures, maybe someone else does. 
As a thought, you could take pictures, post them, and some old-timers can 
look them over to see if you have an original configuration.

Does anyone have photos online of (1) the original design of the front hatch 
cover (probably several original designs I'd imagine) - mine is a wooden 
frame with a piece of plexi screwed every 2 inches or so down on top of the 
wooden frame, (2) the front hatch cover lock and (3) The rear hatch cover 
and locks?
