The Yanmar I have has a hand priming pump that works the diaphram of the
fuel pump-I thought they all did. Anyway, there is a phillips head bolt on
top of the filter mounted on the engine (the secondary) that you crack to
bleed the system. The engine originally had a so called self priming
circuit, that sucked, basically. Running a return line back to the fuel
tank (from the injectors) is the way to go. Be careful with those bolts on
the injector nozzles-they are hollow and won't take a whole lot of abuse. I
carry spares.
BTW the purpose of excess fuel being pumped past the injectors ( or
nozzles) is for cooling purposes
