Charles,
I would say that the pump uses standard rope packing like that on a Model A 
Ford.  Back off the gland nut pull out the old packing , inspect the shaft, 
polish or replace as necessary , replace the packing and Hand tighten the gland 
nut.  Start the engine and allow to run for a bit.  The packing will leak, thus 
lubricating the shaft.  Then with engine running tighten gland nut only 
enough to stop the drip.

This packing should be available at a decent plumbing or mill supply store.
