Good point George. Also true is they transfer more load to hardware and the boat because they do not *give* in gusts. Like you say, when the *give*, they explode.

  Dacron holds up very well if given good care.  The cause of "bagged
  out" sails is using them in winds that are too high.  The too-high
  force on the sail stretches the fabric.

  Modern high-tech sails are designed to be stronger for a given weight.
  This generally allows them to work over a slightly higher range of
  winds while holding their shape.  When that range is exceeded, however,
  they're likely to fail catastrophically.  That's why you don't see
  stretched-out high-tech sails--they explode, instead.
