[Alberg30] Hurricane Preparations

All -

I check mine today! Actually, this has been interesting to me as we usually
do this drill a couple times a year. Many marinas in our area REQUIRE you
to leave the dock. If you don't they will move your boat for you & charge
you for the exercise. This reduces the chances that your boat will damage
their docks.

The favored tackle in our area (shallow water with soft silty bottoms) is
2 oversized Fortress anchors with the flaps in the "mud" position, 20 - 50
feet of galvanized or stainless cable, and 100 - 150 feet of oversized nylon
rope. LOTS of chafing protection - I use soft nylon tubing reinforced with
some kind of fiber, and then duct tape. I tie the rodes to the cleat, then
the mast. The steel cable allows the anchor to "dig down" to firmer mud
better than the chain.

As mentioned, strip the topsides (many even remove the boom). I usually set
up the halyards as extra stays fore & aft in case someone drags into me &
damages the rigging (this happened during Gloria but damage was
inconsequential). I cover all the vents (plastic bags covered in duct
tape), fasten the lockers & hatch with plastic wire ties (so someone can get
in a hurry if necessary). I take all the loose valuables (VHF, binoculars,
etc.) and books home, wind-driven water can get in & make a mess even if
your boat is usually dry. I connect the bilge pump directly to the battery,
and directly tie the 2 batteries together, bypassing the main power switch.
One guy I know sets up a separate bilge pump & switch higher than his usual
one, in case the first fails.

In the end, prayer is probably the best option.

I have always understood that the best bet is a mooring or Star shaped
Anchor for the boat.THis way you limit your connection with the dock, give
the ability fo the boat to ride out the storm as best it can with what the
designer has give it and hope that the chain holds. Generally if the chain
is in good shape it will hold the boat but doubling up the lines is the
key. Obviously anything can and will go wrong according to murphy. If
youre going to pray do it with a little help though.

The Star shaped anchor looks like :

                    + : Anchor
                    |
                    | :Chain
                    |
                    |
120 degree angle O---------------: Chain to boat
  on all sides / \
                  / \
                 / \
                / \
       Anchor: + + Anchor

I do not remember the name But I believe that this can help next to
placing you boat up in the back waters of the Bay Creeks.
