One of the methods that works to preserve the wood is to apply a thin coat
of West Systems to the wooden spreaders. When epoxy is cured, we painted the
tops with Interlux one part these spreaders have not been refinished in 4
years and look as nice as  the day they were installed. BTW, we used white
oak to make the spreaders. I also like someone's suggestion on the list to
use Douglas fir.

Hello there -

I like wooden spreaders for their looks and for their authenticity.  It is
easy to keep a finish on them even in tropical waters by painting the upper
surfaces (the part the sun beats upon) gloss white and varnishing the
bottoms (the part you can see).
