[Public-list] Engine Beds

Hi Matthew,
The original A30s had Gray Marine engines. When they switched to Atomic 4s
the mounts on the engines were modified with brackets to fit the engine
beds. If your beds are solid, I would take the mechanics advice or seek a
second opinion from another mechanic if you are not certain. It would be
more expensive to cut out the old beds and install news ones, although a lot
of A30s have done this when changing out the engine. Another big change is
that the Atomic 4 was hard mounted, while the new engine will be mounted on
flexible motor mounts. All things being equal, this would necessitate a
change to the bed or mounting brackets. Hope this helps.

Has anyone installed their new diesel onto the existing A4 engine beds and
brackets in the 1968 or pre-liner A-30? The mechanic I am working with has
suggested welding some steel to make the Beta BD722 20 horse (which weighs
less then the A4) fit onto the A4 brackets. The brackets appear to be
corrosion free and the beds are in good shape. Has anyone done this or is
it imperative to re-doe the entire beds and brackets? The mechanic seems to
think that his way would work fine and save me a lot of money and time? I
am really confused. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Matthew #314
