Don, I need to check but don't the chain plates go through the inboard side
of the hull to deck joint which is solid?

because my boat had core at every through-deck fitting, stantion,
chainplate, waste, fuel, water or vent. The same went for the cockpit floor.

the deck. But water penetration does rot out the bulkheads and deck knees.
If one were to go to the trouble of making these tubes for the chainplates,
would it be advantageous to allow the tube to stand proud of the deck? Even
a 1/2" would prevent most of the rain water from entering. The tube idea
allows for a much greater surface area for the caulk and the chain plate
cover may not be needed. I like the idea of creating a 'curb' for the water
to run off and not try to enter the chainplate slot from the deck level.
The 'curb' would protect the slot from perhaps 80% of the water trying to
enter. The caulk would help with the 20% when the rail is under water. The
tube is a nifty idea.
