On the later boats (Peter's is #478) the beam is internal to the liner. It
is not a wood beam, rather an aluminum box beam that is part of the deck and

liner of the boat. It is much more difficult to repair and the mast base
sits on the aft edge of the beam rather that directly over it. Excessive
backstay tension will cause the deck to deflect behind the mast base. It
seems to go only so far, then stop. I have not seen a newesr (boat with a
liner) have so much deflection as to interfer with the doors below. If
someone has done a repair to the newer style boats, I would like to hear how

it was done.

Peter,

I understand the comments from Mike and George, the step on #114 sits
directly over the beam and the center bolts actually are bolted through the
beam. Unless Whitby made changes during different production years. I
sistered the metal support plates over the main beam on our Alberg because I
had some deflection and doors into the v-berth would not close. That has
been repaired and I actually tuned the rig on Friday and everything is fine.

Stephen, yes, the point was that I could not understand why the mast was not
squarely above the beam. The cabin doors do close but there is indentation
behind the mast topside and a bulge in the cabin ceiling below.I dont want
to cure the symptoms without removing the cause. Peter
