Bronze or SS?? I have no idea, but I will check. I am going down to the boat
next Friday. The shaft and the cutlass bearing were changed when I purchased
the boat in Annapolis in 2000.
  I did have a improperly aligned engine and most likely that hastened the
wear on the bearings or the job was not done properly to start with.

The question is not how high is high; but how bad is bad. The principal risk
that you run is scoring the shaft, and needing to replace it when the
cutlass bearing is replaced. Is your shaft bronze or SS? With as little use
as you say, you are probably not risking much. I have seen boats with
cutlass bearing that are virtually non-existant and they still use them
without replacing the bearing.

Speaking of cutlass bearings.
SallyB #441 is in the water year round in Charleston. I have the bottom
cleaned every 60 days by a diver. On his last invoice he noted that my paint
was good but the cutlass bearing was bad.
I was not planning on hauling the boat until next fall. I use the atomic 4
only to get in and out of the marina or some time go up the waterway a few
miles. Am I in danger of doing further damage by not addressing the issue
now?
I know that everything is a matter of degree and I am asking a how high is
high question. But I am asking it anyway.

The casting that holds the cutlass is screwed onto the stern tube. Also as
you mentioned the two bolts hold this casting to the hull. You have a few
choices remove the shaft, unscrew set screws on the sides probably buried
under bottom paint make two slices in the cutlass which will collapse and
should be (easily?) removed. The second option is remove the prop,
disconnect the hose with stuffing box and remove the entire assembly. Please
so not beat on the casting every shot you will see dollar signs for a
replacement.

I need to replace my cutlass this year, I am going to use the slice option
and use thread rod to reinstall the new bearing. You also have to make two
holes into the cutlass for water entry, you will see this on the casting.

Albergers,

Because the shaft seems a little loose, last weekend a friend and I tried to
remove the casting that contains the shaft and bearing.  It is at the aft
end of the keel appears to be surface mounted.  We removed the bolts top and
bottom and beat on it a little but it wouldn't budge.  Any suggestions
please as to how to get it off without causing damage?
