I belabor this point---a meter is best way to go. barring having one,  the test I suggested will work. charge the battery enough to start the motor. remove the connection. turn the lights on, etc and it will drain the battery very quickly. A sound alternator is going to be fine for the duration of the test. a week one is already gone and it is the problem. I have never hurt an alternator with this test. 

Your problem is that your battery bank isn't being charged. If you have good batteries then you likely have an alternator problem/ presuming all of the connections are good.
