Hi Peter,
I made the decision to sail on down to Grenada to leave my boat there because
according to the insurance companies, if you are 12 degree south, or lower
you are out of Hurricane Alley. Stone buildings built 300 years ago where
destroyed during Hurricane Ivan. Grenada never experienced a storm of such
devastation.
What was really terrible is the fact that 48 hours before it's turn to the
south, Hurricane Ivan was headed to cross the Lesser Antilles 150 miles north
near the island of Martinique. Over 100 yachts sailed south with that
prediction. They sailed from Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines all
headed for Grenada. They all arrived just in time for Ivan. Most of them where
lost.
No matter what the statistic, hurricanes cannot be predicted.
I've just purchased a Pearson-Alberg35 in Florida and shall be wintering this
year in Bocas del Toro, Panama, 9 degrees above the equator.
Regards, Dave
