The mystery oil/ring gambit is more to figure out where 
you have lost compression.

Test compression and record numbers. Squirt oil in 
cylinder(s) snd test again. If there is improvement-ring 
problem. If no improvement-that's a good thing, problem is 
valves or head gasket. Or cratered piston, which is back 
to being a bad thing. Check for blowback out of your 
crankcase (from dipstick hole).
