The aft end of my cockpit coamings have small knees that support it - anchored on the inside. This works well however they are a little hard to varnish as their forward sides are too close to the traveller (Harken rig with blocks attached to the coaming). if you go this route - actually whatever you choose - make sure the maintenance is considered.

The knees look good.

I could be mis-interpreting what you're talking about, but why not
rebuild the traveler support to function as your "cross piece."  It is
already back there in the right place, and would seem perfectly
positioned to serve that purpose (I doubt anyone would even notice a
difference unless you pointed it out).
