I remember seeing someone at the A-30 Races at NYC Toronto with a panel 
located aft of the pushpit on the same plane as the top rail. Aesthetically, 
when deployed it had very little visual impact as it is so thin, being 
parallel to the horizontal plane of the rail. If one were to install the 
panel so that it could be folded down vertical, when not in use, in Marinas 
it would go a long way to protect it from oafish neighbours docking. It 
could then be tilted up parallel when underway, at anchor or when on a 
mooring.

Just a thought - look forward to reading other's thoughts.

For what it's worth, thought I'd throw in my experience.

I have a 75 watt panel that I have temporarily tied down on the main hatch
cover under the boom.  Even with the sail cover partially blocking the sun
when it's overhead, it still charges my batteries very well.

My stern pulpit is original and has been banged around a little over the
years.  I had thoughts to build a new stern pulpit that would incorporate a
mounting bracket on one of the sides.  The idea is to make the bracket able
to rotate up to either leave the panel laying horizontal or adjust it toward
the sun if I'm on the boat and feel like trying to squeeze a little more
power out of it.  The side of the stern pulpit would extend forward enough
to have a solid attachment point behind the entire panel.

Where it is located now, it is in danger of getting stepped on by someone
folding the main sail, so I won't be leaving it there for good.  But for the
past year that I've had it, the cabin top is the only available place to
easily and temporarily attach the roughly 2 1/2 by 4 foot panel.

75 watts is more than enough to top off batteries while on the mooring.  You
could get by with a smaller panel to keep batteries full, especially if you
don't use a lot of 12v power.  I need it to recharge my batteries after
generating the 1.21 gigawatts of power for my flux capacitor.
