Back in the '80's I was part owner in a marine oriented publication whose
purpose was the printing of classified ads (besides making money) I
remember we hired a young woman to do data entry of the ads; she asked me if
there was an easy way tell if the boats in the ads were power or sail boats.
I told her that if the boat's trade name invoked violence, poisonous
reptiles, dangerous insects or savage animals, it was a power boat. If trhe
boat's manufacturer was named for its designer, a graceful sea creature or a
weather pattern, it was a sailing boat. Usually the test worked.
With regard to individual names of boats, I always suggest that one should
consider how the boat's name can be malformed by rivals or even crewmembers.
Here are some I knew...
Barca Nostra became Barking Dog
Valour became Velour
Orace (named for a fast square rigger the owner's ancestor owned) became
Orifice
Passing Wind became, well you can guess
Deliverance became something foul - I guess the owner had not seen the film
There was a 'No Fat Chicks' whose name was protested officially, and became
'Rule Number Three' which meant...
Etc oh what fun...
