For what it is worth, I just got a 12 gauge extension cord at Walmart. The 
package says it is rated for a 15 amp power tool. That suggests the usual 14 
or 16 gauge cord  is good for a light bulb or maybe drill. It will do the 
job for a 2 HP air compressor-the smaller cords wouldn't, too much voltage 
drop over it's run.

100 feet for $30.00. they also had 50 foot lengths.
