For any of you wanting extra information on epoxy - polyester bonding
and an example of making a rudder from scratch ( after repair was not
practical), get a copy of Gougeon's Epoxyworks, number 22, Winter
2004. Epoxyworks is free to anyone in Canada and the US who takes the
time to ask for a subscription. Both the rudder project and a technical
articles are available in this issue. The technical articles detail the
breaking strengths of both repairs to polyester substrates using epoxy
vs polyester and adhesion to gelcoats of epoxy mixtures. The main
conclusion was to maximise the bonding surface with long scarfe joints -
minimum 12:1.
Also in this issue is an article on obtaining flexible moulds for
repairing existing non-skid patterns from a maker of non-skid moulds.
