Of course we have always used the action/reaction laws and the formula F = 
MA to move stuff by expelling steam (mass) under pressure 
(acceleration)  but I think they are also using Computational Fluid 
Dynamics (needs computers because of it's complex formulas) to harness that 
extra power that can be had from using supersonic shockwaves in the steam. 
Not long ago there wasn't enough computer power on the planet to model a 
simple shockwave in steam but these days CFD is being used to improve the 
performance of many machines including electrical generators (my background).

Not that I understand those formulas, if I did I would be an Engineer not 
an Engineering Technician. LOL
