Aha!  The wonders of modern technology! Thank you Bob!

The ballast in the keel: the cast iron, once lowered into the keel from 
above, is glassed in place, with cavities filled with resin.  I do not know 
wether there is a difference in this technique between boats with liners and 
those without.
