Mike,

The pawl on your bronze main winches are held in place by a bronze pin. That
pin is pressed in and can fall out and be lost. I had some issues with the
winch used off the stern. If they are lost, I do not think you can replaced
these parts. Be careful.

Clean the winch by disassembling and soaking in kerosene.
After a day or two or more if you like,  clean with rag scrubbing if
necessary.
Use not the west grease but the Lewmar winch grease.
Yes it costs but it is the best formulated for addressing the unique
nature of winch lubrication.

I was told this by one of the older & better known riggers here in
annapolis. He applys this technique to every winch he services.
