Mike - you are right about the winch handle as the screwdrive to take them
apart. Be careful not to lose and paws or springs. There are no bearings in
these winches.

Yes, I got the Barient apart and it has caged roller bearings.
I will clean with mineral spirits, rinse and regrease.

Haven't got the SouthCoast apart yet. I presume the winch handle is my
screwdriver for the slot on top?

Can I get Teflon grease from an Auto Supply?

Mike,

The bronze style with spade winch handle do not have bearings. If you have a
bearing in your winches, which I think the Barients do, I have the same
winch with a bearing. If you have bearings the grease is truly lubricating
the unit.

I would recommend looking at PY Yachts for grease as well, since West bought
out Boat U.S. Retail their prices have gone up significantly. As John
mentioned, light oil on pawls and a good Teflon grease would work well. I
tried the West brand winch grease and do not care for it. I have also used
auto lithium grease. I am sure other on the list will have recommendations.

I have Barient 22's and what I assume are the original "SouthCoast" winches.

Mike,

Which winches do you have on the boat?

I know I am being cheap again, but can anyone reccomend a grease for the
winches that costs less than $11 for 3.5 oz? That's what West Marine wants
for their lithium grease. I'll pay it if it's truly marinized grease!
