The later models are set up this way - but some of the boats have really old 
switches that disconnect when switching batteries. I recommend that if 
anyone has one of these older switches they replace it with a new one. It is 
a lot cheaper than diodes.

isn't the switch set up so it is not off between positions so an alternater 
never sees an open circuit and thereby blow out its diodes?
