[Public-list] Have you used a Star mainsail?

Randy,

I think if you put the numbers together for a Star main and the cost of
rework the cost may be just under $1000. Also if you are experiencing
tearing and sailing in conditions that require reefing, I would recommend a
heavier cloth than 4 to 5 oz. The United for $1300 isn't a bad buy, I think
they are made off-shore not sure about the manufacturer. Having owned a
Haarstick main purchased used from Harry Gamber and speaking with these
folks I would recommend them highly in providing sails. They make one nice
sail which can handle most or all off-shore conditions.

Subject: [Public-list] Have you used a Star mainsail?

Greetings--
I've recently searched Bacon Sails for a used main for the boat. They
have dozens of Star mains (about the same size). M ost are $under 400.
There's one Alberb main listed (new) for $1100.

Has anyone bought and modified one of the Star mains for our boats? I
know some modifications would be expected:
    * The tack set-back would be needed on my boat
    * Reef points have to be added
    *  other things?

Is it practical to take on one of these sails given the modifications
that would be required? Any opinions?

Many thanks,
Randy Katz
