Interesting,
That is a similar summary that was shot across my bow a few years ago in a
discussion with a boat broker.
I own a 2nd A30 that is in its beginning stages of rehab.
My opinion is:
I purcahsed Infinity #57 from my aunt back in '97. She Purchased it from
John Wrights Wife in '89 or so and the wright had owner her for some 20
years. In the time she owned her my aunt did very little to maintain the
boat other than the paint and workable engine maintenance. I purchased
Infinity and have worked on practically everything on that boat. Not that
in every case I needed to but that in many instances I had neglected
something or felt it was an important issue to address.
My aunt visited me a few years back and suggested that when she had her
she looked Prettier, now she was more mechanincally sound. After that I
did up the Hull and bright work and now she looks great.
My 2nd boat I purchased, put a bottom on her, put new thru-hulls on and
launched her without a motor and sailed her from the backwaters of middle
river to Kitty Duvall Creek on the south River in Annapolis with 30 year
old sails and it took 18 hours of drifting. She could use everything. Not
much different than what I have right now with Infinity.
The fact is:
I can sail her, I can cruise her with a motor (it helps) and I can work on
her at my leisure. It has been a bit leisurely lately but I am committed
to getting her back to a racing-able condition for next season. I have not
spent more yet than it cost to purchase Infinity. Infact I do not expect
to spend that much.
However I do the work. I do not have contractors do my work, even the
motor is aligned by me. The work gives me quite time, down time, time
working on somthing other than computers. Many people do not have this
priority or ability but many do. This class resource is one of the reasons
for my comfort with working on the boat. Almost everything is documented
here or in the class maintenance manual. I believe the early hulls -
derelict or not are amazing. If you can get your hands on one its better
than a newer hull. The cleaning and maintenance is wrote. Just do it. Then
you have yourself a great sailable boat. BTW: Infinity 1x19 shrouds are
original. I have shortened them to use sta-locks and Norsemen fittings but
otherwise are in excellent shape.
If I were to purchase this boat she would be in the water in 2 weeks and
sailing home. I suggest that anyone who is willing to do the work ... do
it. And keep us posted. Many may be able to help.
