If you are in Halifax I presume you are doing offshore sailing and will want
an engine that can hold you into offshore conditions. If I were you I would
want an engine that can deliver full hullspeed of roughly 6.5 knots. While
the exact combination of prop size and engine rpm is much debated, I havent
seen too many A30 owners talk about re-powering with less than 20 HP. 
Suugest you check out the repowering an Older Alberg 30 with a Yanmar 2GM20

And I am sure you will also get lots of good advice from Don Campbell and
other mechanically-minded A30 asscoiation members...

Hi David,
Our boat, #255 Stargazer, came with a Volvo MD11 C, which is rated at 16 HP

at 2200 RPM. I feel that the engine has just enough power; we get around 4 
knots  at 1700 RPM in smooth water. I guess it would be up to you if you
would 
consider  an engine with less power.
