[Public-list] Anchors

I have used the following for 10 or 12 years in the Chesapeake--where 
there are few rocks, some crab pots and an occasional bicycle to foul an 
anchor: 

Anchor  ( I use most the knock off danforth one that came with the boat 
37 years ago)
10 feet of chain
20 feet of 5/8" nylon line
20 feet of chain
150 feet  5/8" nylon

The connections between chain and nylon are galvanized shackles with 
pins wired, (replaced about every 5 years) in spliced line.  I rarely 
put out more than 60 feet.
The second bit of chain folds the line down, acting as an effective 
catenary.  In a quiet anchorage, the boat will settle about 70-80 
degrees off the second bit of chain--the anchor becomes, in this case, 
just insurance.  I have never had an anchor drag with this rig, unless 
badly fouled--and that in a 40 kt squall in mud the consistency of 
applesauce.  Is this overkill?? You betcha, and I sleep really well!!!

I also carry a 35 lb plough, in case things get really interesting.  
Have yet to wet it.
