Where I've done recoring under a stanchion or stern pulpit, I just left 
out the core in those area and built up solid glass.  Just keep adding 
layers of mat and resin.  You do need to let the resin kick every few 
layers, but if you don't wait for it to completely cure, you don't have 
to grind and you get a chemical bonding between the layers.  I work slow 
enough that the resin kicks off, anyway.
