Note: the 1/4 round moulding was standard on the older boats and did not
come one the newer boats.

On reinstalling the coamings I applied a sticky backed, closed cell,
neoprene foam gasket to the fiberglass. This way I can remove them easily
next time for refinnishing. The thickness is maybe less than 1/8" thick and
comes in sheets 36" wide. I covered the whole area of fiberglass that
supports the coamings, and trimmed it with a sharp knife at the deck and
around the winch supports. My boat did not come with the quarter round
moulding you describe, it may have been an add on, as you say, to give extra
sealing.
