Albergers
Ive updated the spreadsheet history of our grand Alberg 30
boats which I posted on the associations web site earlier this year.
George will post this revised version on the site presently, but Ill be
happy to email one to you directly if youd like.
For those of you who are Excel familiar, you can unhide the indexing
columns and do sorts to find some interesting information, such as:
We have identified about ¾ of the 704 Alberg 30s ever built - information
gotten from old Chesapeake and Great Lakes handbooks (courtesy Ralph
Bluntschli & Don Campbell), emails & conversations with owners, US &
Canadian documentation records, and mining the A30 internet discussion
lists. Some boats have only one entry, while some have records up to eight
owners.
Our boats are spread out including Australia and the West Indies, but
mostly the Chesapeake and Great lakes. The largest concentrations are
Maryland/Virginia with at least 107 and Ontario with at least 35. There are
also 16 on the West Coast, 17 in New York, and 13 in Florida. (Of course,
in the winter all the Ontarians are added to the Florida total.) These
numbers are based on my 2005 listings only, so there undoubtedly more.
As an example of the sorting you can do with the kist, here are quite a
few old farts timers who have kept their boats a long time:
Years Name First Last Location
38 Babette Phil/Barb/Liz/Read Beigel Maryland
38 Bandit/Backfin Fritz/John Finley Maryland
38 Marlin Bob/Martha/Bryan Marshall/Scott Maryland
37 Whisper Ken Ames Maryland
36 Kachina Doll Marshall/Paula Binder Maryland
34 Grayling Les/Bob Muir Ontario
34 Linkaten Tom Maroldy Maryland
32 Scamp II Ax Nystrom Maryland
32 Checkmate Charlie/Mike Grosh Maryland
32 Lin Gin Bruce/Andy Rankin Maryland
31 Spot Joe Galvagna Maryland
31 Windward Jerry Snow Maryland
31 Kahawai Bob Rick Deb Chambers Maryland
31 Mystique Jim Gibson Maryland
30 Second2Nun Harry Gamber Maryland
29 Cold Duck John Sauerwald Ontario
29 Wind Call Bob Johns New York
28 Good Week Al Suwalsky etc. Maryland
27 Gilleleje Mike Lehman Maryland
25 Freedom Ted Liszczak New Hampshire
25 Tern Two Fayne/Sue Farrar/Barrett Maryland
25 Lancashire Lass Kenneth Robertson Ontario
(Dennis Furnis in Ontario may have the record, but I dont know if hes
still an owner this year. Bruce Breiding & Mike Brown were also 38 year
folks before they sold this year.
A couple of notes on the way the spreadsheet is set up:
1. The US vs KC designation is not entirely clear. As far as I can
tell, Whitby gave dual numbers to only the first 22 or so boats maybe
fewer. Those boats with dual numbers need a US or KC to differentiate
them. Later boats dont, even if they usually use the prefix, so Ive left
them off.
2. The Kept column is not necessary and can be confusing since one
owner could have kept his boat in several different creeks & marinas
during his ownership. I only added it since its given in the Handbook in
most cases and was easy to enter. Feel free to ignore. The Location
column is very useful, though.
3. The numbering may not be 100% accurate. Whitby/Hanson apparently
was a little cavalier on his numbering system as some of our past
discussions make clear. By building the spreadsheet I was able to correct
some misnumbering in a couple of handbook issues, but there are still
discrepancies. For instance we seem to have two 227s which Ive indicated
with an asterisk. That may be Whitbys mistake or the owners. Any help
appreciated.
4. For years of ownership, Ive only listed those I can verify. Many
people may have had their boats longer than listed.
Cheers,
Bob Kirk
