Look, this is not the america's cup. I am not trying to turn it into that. I
just want to have the option to repower my boat with an outboard and still
be able to race. 

I don't know about you, but I hate protests. I would just as soon stay out
of the protest room at all costs, no matter what side of the table I am
sitting on. So the idea that I should just do what I want and then expect
people to protest me if they don't like it seems silly. That's why I am
asking the question (and for a rules clarification now). 

When I am done with a race, I would MUCH rather spend time drinking beer and
hanging out with my friends the other racers than presenting my side of the
story in a protest room!

And I don't want to make anybody police boats. That's why I'm being open and
honest about my intentions.

There have been in the past several, well, pushing the 
envelope of one design standards. Cellar jacks under the 
mainbeam, installing lower HP., lighter, more compact 
(installed as far forward in the engine compartment as 
possible)engines, owning two Albergs, one for cruising, 
one for racing.

Mike Lehman raises a good point: no one wants to go around 
policing boats for compliance. It really is supposed to be 
a gentleman's sport, but how far does one really have to 
travel to get to the spectacle of match racing team NZ 
giant monohull vs. team Dennis Connor multihull?

My thinking is the protest route is the most pragmatic way 
of dealing with the issue. Race, and if you win, espect a 
rules committee visit. Every owner can decide for himself 
if the modification he makes is worth risking forfeiture 
of silver. Kinda self regulating, huh?
