Hey guys,

Thanks for the info on the thru hulls and seacocks.
I've been pulling, cutting and unscrewing old derelict
stuff for days, but progress is being made. The bilge
is clean and the diesel is diminishing. As you might
expect, I have a question.

I thought I was standing on top of the keel in the
second well of the battery box. It was some type of
mortar mix which I thought was poured over the top of
the keel. It turned out to be a layer of mortar poured
over a second subfloor below which was a 6" cavity of
trapped foul bilge water and then the top of the keel.
This was also the case in the first well as you come
down the companionway. Each well is separated by a
vertical support wall for the true subfloor, kind of a
sub-bulkhead. There are three wells forward of the
companionway all following a slope from fore to aft
and probably at one time connected to allow drainage
aft. My question lies in the area beneath my engine
compartment. That "well" is 6" higher than its
adjacent foreward well. It has been poured with mortar
as well, but it may be poured solid. I do not want to
hold foul water but am not sure I can drain this area
or even if it is a cavity.
Can anyone describe the construction of the
bilge/keel/battery box design on most of the boats or
has anyone run into a similar situation?

Thank you for you assistance.
