Many thanks for the thoughtful ideas on the glow plugs.

I bought a new pre-heat solenoid for the Universal M3-20B for a mere $25 and
will try your suggested tests this weekend.

 The culminating event will be (I hope) installing the new solenoid and
having the machine spring to life as usual with a 10-15 sec. glow on.

    I'll let you know what happens!
