[Public-list] Engine Question

Jon,

I have a 12"x12 3-blade on my boat and it works fine. 12" is better than 13
on the A30 because of the aperature opening. With 12" you reduce the amount
of prop wash and noise. As for the pitch, that should be determined by the
power curve of the engine, shape of the hull, displacement of the vessel -
-lot's of factors. A test is to see if you can get max rated RPM for the
engine when it is in the water. You will never run the engine at that speed
but you should be able to reach it [or close to it]. You cruising speed with
a diesel is generally around 75% of full throttle. Many people over-prop and
'labor' their engines with too low RPM which reduces power and effiency.
Hope this helps

BTW, The prop can be re-pitched for fine tuning but there are limits as to
how much. If I remember correctly it is 2" in either direction so....a 12x13
can be repitched to 12x11 or 12x15

Stephen,

Just checked my notes, and the prop specified is a 12" 13 pitch. Any
thoughts on that size?

Jon

Jon,

I have the same installation in #114. They made Z-Brackets which the motor
mounts are mounted. Which Yanmar are you installing in the Alberg? You
should verify that they are providing a new propeller with the installation,
the Campbell which is a 12 or 13 X 7 pitch will not work well with the
Yanmar.

I am in the process of replacing my Gray Marine with a new Yanmar. The work
is being done by a local engine service company in Annapolis. I went to
check on the progress of the job this weekend and was surprised to see the
new engine laying on the old Gray beds. The new engine is narrower, and the
mounts do not line up. To compensate, the mechanic manufactured plates to
bolt to the old beds - the new engine mounts are bolted to the plates. Does
this sound correct?

Thanks,
