[Public-list] Mufflers

Bill,

One thing I recall when investigating my exhaust system is one manufacturer
recommended that the capacity of the water lift (muffler) be large enough to
hold the amount of water that drains back (down) from the exhaust hose
leaving the water lift. I guess that's better than having it back up into
the exhaust manifold.

They suggested assuming the hose is half full of water; so, if you have a 2
inch hose, half the volume per linear inch is about 5 cubic inches (1 inch
radius x 3.14159 squared / 2). If the part of the hose that drains back to
the water lift is 6 feet, the water lift should have a minimum capacity of
355 cubic inches or, at 0.004329 gallons per cubic inch; drum roll please,
1.54 gallons. Please note, I am not an engineer (but I played one in my
high school play 36 years ago) so you will need to confirm for yourself if
any of this stuff makes sense.

Roger
