I have a 1961 25ft Whitby, which was the first year Whitby Boat Works was in
collaboration with Carl Alberg. From what I've seen of the boat plans of
the Alberg 30 and Alberg 37, it is a dead ringer, but on the smaller scale.
Someone told me she's a Continental 25, and worth $2500. in poor condition,
up to $10K, in good condition. Someone else told me, due to the
super-strong, quality construction, to replace her in today's dollars would
cost about 85K! I was trying to sell the boat, since it's missing the
diesel engine it was set up for, and I have other boats. I had just
finished repainting the interior, and scrubbing the exterior, and was asking
$2500.00. Some people were interested, but no one came to look at her.
Then, a few months ago, a commercial party boat tangled with her while she
sat on her mooring, and broke the mast off about 4 ft. above the deck! No
one "saw" anything or will admit to anything, so it's my loss. I'm totally
disgusted. The rigging had been so strong, with no problems! Other masts
are around, but I don't want to spend the money for the haul-out and to
refit the roller-furling, etc.
Now, I don't even know what to ask for the boat. She's still an incredibly
strong hull, with beautiful lines, but.....
Does anyone have any idea what I should ask for her, in her current
condition? I hate to just give her away, but....
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Vicky
