Mine come back to a turning block. I actually have two - you can see them http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2s2y6/id1.html The guy that had the boat before me was into them. Mine are actually bolted to the rail and into the deck. I have not seen them flex.
 
My winches may be further forward than yours. This arrangement would not work so well if I was using the aft winch.

Tim Williams uses turning blocks on LinGin. You might ask him about them. I
think that they blew one up in the 2002 NOOD. It was windy that day. Those
blocks are under a lot of load, as you pointed out.

Personally, I like them because I think they make a good lead into the
winch.

I would look at LinGin if I were you, and ask Tim why he uses them.
