I asked about backing an A30 into a slip a while back
and got lots of advice, some of which worked for me at
least partially.
Upon trying all of the advice I have found that for
me:
1. Backing up fast under power, gross rudder
adjustments work a little sometimes.
2. Backing up fast under power, slight rudder
adjustments are completely ineffectual.
3. Backing up fast in neutral, moderate rudder
adjustments work a little sometimes.
4. Backing up fast in neutral, gross rudder
adjustments don't seem to work (rudder stalls?).
5. Backing slowly, under power or not, steering is
pretty ineffectual.
6. If backing (preferrably with a little speed)
shifting into forward along with rudder adjustment and
a burst of throttle, turns the boat very nicely. If I
am quick to shift back into neutral or reverse
momentum isn't all lost and I can continue to back on
the new course. If I have to use a lot of throttle in
reverse to get momentum going I may need another
little burst of forward to adjust course.
Figuring out number 6 was a breakthrough for me. It
made the difference between taking multiple attempts
(sometimes many) at getting lined up and just backing
in on the first try if I am even close on my
estimation of wind and current. Now it isn't quite so
much like hearding cats :)
