[Public-list] Boarding Ladders

Dave,

We, and several others in the the group, are using the removable ladder that
hangs over the stern from West Marine

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/143419/0/0/ladder/All_2/mode%20matchallpartial/30/0

We use the 4-step which puts the next to the last step even with the water
and the last step under the water. Depending on your mobility and strength,
you may want to consider the 5-step version which puts 2 steps in the water
and makes it easier to board. The stand-offs are too short, so we use PVC
pipe that just fits over the existing stand-offs and by using 2 two
90-degree elbows we have a cross piece so that the standoffs are not just a
pipe-end poking into the transom (does that make sense?). The cross member
is covered with pipe insulation foam to protect the hull. This arrangement
works very well and the ladder stores in the lazarette while underway. The
ladders are SS tubing and plenty strong.

Hi there -

Mine was made by Stainless Outfitters of Barrie Ontario. My only
complaint
with it is that the stand-off legs are too short, I would have liked
them to
be a little longer.

My opinion of boom brakes is that they are more hassle than they are
worth.
You can quite efficiently control the boom even in high wind jibes by
using
the mainsheet. (that's just my opinion - watch, now that I have made
the
preceding statement, I will break something during a jibe this
summer...)
