Pete, I replaced my starboard bulkhead last year and did not have to take the mast off. We supported it with a house jack and some wood supports. It really isn't that big of a deal to replace vs. trying to do a stop gap until you do replace it. It will probably take the same amount of time. I used teak as a replacement. Patty Timbuktu #461
