in the frozen north this is a yearly problem. On my boat I use a tension
meter and the scale shows a percentage of breaking strength, I set all of
mine to 10% of breaking. This is done at dockside and after cantreing the
rig as you state.  When this done done go out with full sail and check for
a slack cap shroud but not a loose shroud, if this is good you should be
O.K for awhile but check later because the wire will stretch over time.
The cross section of my mast is so great that I cannot induce any mast
bend at all and find I do not need any.
