It must have been two pieces, as the post I removed certainly didn't 
reach the gudgeon.  But I think it was probably about a foot long.

Whitby was known to pinch a penny, so cost or ready availability may 
have been the deciding factor.  It may also be that a single piece would 
require more precision in alignment than is practical.  I'm really not 
competent to say.
