Hi John,

The sheave you are describing is made with pheonlic material and it is the
original material used by Whitby.

Andrew,
I replaced my sheave in the mid 1980's. My halyard kept jumping the sheave
and getting jammed. I couldn't find a sheave the right size so I had one
made at a local machine shop in Ft. Pearce, FL. I had the sheave made of
aluminium. It worked for a while but eventually became frozen up. I can
still raise the sail but I don't think the sheave is even turning. I
remember that there was some kind of housing around the sheave that, if I am
remembering right, I also had to replace. I think I used stainless steel. I
remember that there were problems in assembling the whole thing. Could you
explain to me what the housing around the sheave consists of? I found my old
sheave today and measured it. It is about 6 5/8 " in diameter and about 1/2
" thick. The hole is about 5/8" in diameter. The sheave is chewed up around
the edges so the measurement could be off some. I don't remember if the hole
had a bushing in it. It is not in it now. The sheave is made of a brown
material that looks li
ke wood but appears to actually be some kind of synthetic material and has
a light pattern on the surface that looks sort of like cloth. Does this
sound like the origional sheave. My boat is #15 and was built in 1965. I am
planning to take my mast off soon and I want to replace the sheave and take
care of that problem.
Any comments you or the group may have will be appreciated.
Thanks,
John #15

To all who inquired, there is still time to order sheaves, but not a lot.

If you can pick up the sheave in Annapolis, the cost is $70, if you need
it shipped in the US, it it $70.

Please send a check payable to Zephyr Werkes to me at:
