Mike,
I agree with David. Machining is best done out of the boat. There are some folks who have portable resurfacing untis but true milling machines require the block to be on the machine's table. The damage to the block can be welded and then the surface milled to accept the new / used surfaced head. The stud can be drilled out and removed. Valves should not be an issue. I don't know these engines well but I assume they have replacable valve guides.

Sounds like except for the head you are able to use what you have. Depending on where the head is broken you might be able to use that as well.

Most of these repairs or some similar to would need to be done for a complete overhaul anyway. Hope this makes you feel better. Something always goes wrong when doing a complete overhaul, seldom if ever does all go smoothly and do all parts come apart easily.

I worked on antique, I mean 1920's cars for years. A major consideration was always patience, lots of penitrating oil, let parts soak forever, judicious application of heat and cold, light but systematic tapping, repeat, repeat.....................repeat. About 80% of the time things came apart and the remainder one had to fix the mess they had made.

  Keep us posted,

Oh, BTW was this part of the good Olde Alberg video project.....................?

  Michael

The damage icluded:

We broke the head in half

I broke 1 stud off in the block, below the machined surface

I broke 2 valves off

And there is some pretty serious damage to the top of the block, especially in the front where the crow bar entered. The block needs to be machined, but I do not know if it can be machine in the boat or if it can be machined enough to get a good seal on a replacement head. Does anyone know if is possible to machine the block, in the boat?

In my defense, most of the damage was already done by the time I showed up on the scene. I take responsibility for breaking of the stud and the valves. Man, that head was really stuck - it had ot been removed in over 40 years!Mike Lehman ~~~_/)_/)~~_/)~~~> Date: Mon, 24 Dec 2007 12:29:08 -0500> From: mainstay at csolve.net> To: public-list at lists.alberg30.org> Subject: Re: [Public-List] Looking for a used Atmoic 4> > Michael is correct - cast iron can be welded by a skilled person - all is> not lost!
