[Public-list] Spreader replacement

Alex

I just measured my old ones (I replaced the original ones about 20 yeas
ago). My boat is #505 and the spreaders are 1.75" x 36". The old ones were
1/16" wall thickness and I went to 1/8". I used 6061. I did this after
witnessing, first hand, a speader failure on 527 and the resulting
dis-masting. There is evidence that not all the boats are the same, so it is
best to measure yours carefully before buying replacement tubing. Mine were
a sloppy fit in the socket, as was the case with 527. This caused the
spreaders to move around and the SS socket wore a groove in the bottom of
the speader. It almost cut all the way through. That's why I replaced them.

Hope this helps - did you get your builder's plate?

Hello,

I'm a new Alberg 30 owner beginning a refit of "Blue Heron" #455.
Can anyone provide me with the tube dimensions for the original
spreaders. MIne appear to be original - 1.75", or 44mm round aluminum
tubing, which is badly corroded at both the tips and at the connection
point to the mast - in definite need of replacement. I'd appreciate
any recommendations on which type of aluminum (6061, 6060 or 6063)
would be appropriate and how to isolate the spreaders from the ss
mount on the mast. I've enjoyed reading this forum, and thank you
for any input you may have.
