[Public-list] Rudder Design

Hi All,

I have my rudder, prop, shaft & cutlass housing off.
(Finally got both couplings off the shaft.) The rudder
is fiberglass with metal straps, upper and lower
rudder "shafts" and several long securing bolts or
screws. There is also a long channel in the glass with
what was a single pc of wood filler. Part of this
filler covers the securing nuts on the upper shaft,
but the filler continues down the rudder. It begins
near vertical for 8", just past the second strap turns
toward the trailing edge and continues for 10" past
the forth strap and then continues for another 18".
This filler is only on one side and I see no mention
in the maint. manual of a channel or filler. All of
the straps contact either the upper or lower shaft but
are not fastened to them. The metal shafts are on both
sides and riveted together through the rudder.

1. What is this wood filler for? Mine is deteriorated
and I would love to hear what others have done?
2. Are the bronze straps for stiffness and strength or
were they at one time attached to the rudder shafts?
3. Where can I get a new gudgeon & pintle assembly.
4. How and where do I query the web site for topic
searches so that I do not have to bother everyone with
already covered topics?

Thank you,
John B. Cooler
