Just to throw a couple more thoughts into this.  Tight turns in hoses collect debris.  Leaf and twig residue tends to plug them up.  Also shallow sloping hose also collects dirt and other crud.  The water flow just isn't fast enough to keep it clean.  The straight drop Whitby used is probably the best from a practical point of view for getting rid of the water from the cockpit.
